Prof. Lipej is involved in the research of biodiversity in Slovenian coastal waters. He started his scientific career as a zooplanktologist with special regard to microzooplankton and tintinnids. He focus his research interest to the feeding habits of marine cladoceran Penilia avirostris. Since 1997 he iss dedicated to studies related to marine biodiversity of Slovenia with emphasis to marine fauna and habitat types. His faunistic efforts are focused to the study of coastal ichthyofauna and to research related to the processes of bioinvasion and tropicalisation. Lately, his scientific interests are devoted to the research of Mediterranean stony coral in the Slovenian sea and the Velo jezero (Mljet, Croatia). He included the nondestructive methods in the regular monitoring and research of marine biodiversity of Slovenian sea.

Recent changes in the biodiversity of Mediterranean: experiences from the Slovenian part of the Adriatic Sea.

Abstract

The gulf of Trieste is considered as a cradle of the marine biology and other oceanographic sciences, where the first organized scientific researches were performed. From this point of view this area could be considered as one of the most investigated areas. This might be true from the point of long term, almost two hundred years long research on the marine biodiversity. However, new discoveries are pointing out the fact that marine biodiversity is facing substantial modifications changes due to climatic and oceanographic changes. Many new species for the area were recently detected and degradation of certain essential habitats was noticed.
